PH detects first monkeypox case

PH detects first monkeypox case
(CNN Philippines) Metro Manila — The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday confirmed that the country has recorded its first case of monkeypox.

In a Palace briefing, Health Undersecretary Beverly Ho said the patient is a 31-year-old Filipino who arrived from abroad on July 19. The patient had prior travel to countries with documented monkeypox cases.

Ho, who is also the DOH alternate spokesperson, said the person tested positive for the disease after undergoing RT-PCR test. She added that the patient is undergoing strict isolation and monitoring at home.

The department did not disclose the gender, travel history, and residence of the confirmed monkeypox case.

The DOH added it has identified 10 close contacts, including three from the same household. But Ho said the close contacts are not exhibiting any symptoms and are being monitored.

Monkeypox was earlier declared by the World Health Organization as a public health emergency of international concern.

Monkeypox is a less severe cousin of smallpox that originated from animals and can be transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected individual such as through body fluids, sores or contaminated items, health authorities said.

The WHO earlier noted that most of the monkeypox cases are among men who had sex with other men. However, monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted disease… Read More

(Manila Bulletin) The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) expressed its support for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s plan to strengthen the country’s healthcare system by building specialty hospitals across the Philippines as well as “prioritizing the welfare” of medical frontliners.

Marcos disclosed this plan in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) held on Monday, July 25.

“CHED is facilitating the production of the critical manpower for the President’s plan to build specialty hospitals all over the country. Through the Doktor Para sa Bayan Law, we have authorized the opening of new medical programs in seven universities and recently lifted the 11-year-old moratorium on the offering of new nursing programs in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs),” said CHED in a press statement on Wednesday, July 27.

Through these newly-implemented medical and nursing programs, the Commission highlighted that the country will now be able to produce additional nurses and doctors who may man the additional hospitals that the country is planning to build.

To further encourage aspiring medical professionals, CHED highlighted that there are now 15 public institutions with free medical education in the Philippines… Read More
