Manila in a Minute: The Community Pantry Movement is Thriving
(Reportr) From a small bamboo cart with bags of rice in Quezon City’s restaurant street, the community pantry movement has spread across the country, offering almost everything from sardines to condoms.

Despite red-tagging, volunteers continue to fill up tables with essentials for those who could barely make ends meet during the pandemic. Ana Patricia Non, the originator of the Maginhawa pantry that sparked the movement, was happy to be back this week after a one-day pause to ensure her security… Read More

EU blames China for endangering peace in the South China Sea

EU blames China for endangering peace in the South China Sea
(Reuters) The European Union called out China on Saturday for endangering peace in the South China Sea and urged all parties to abide by a 2016 tribunal ruling which rejected most of China’s claim to sovereignty in the sea, but which Beijing has rejected.

The EU last week released a new policy aimed at stepping up its influence in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China’s rising power.

The Philippines on Friday protested to China over its failure to withdraw what it called as “threatening” boats believed to be manned by maritime militia around the disputed Whitsun Reef, which Manila calls the Julian Felipe Reef.

“Tensions in the South China Sea, including the recent presence of large Chinese vessels at Whitsun Reef, endanger peace and stability in the region,” a EU spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday… Read More

Read More

PNP clearance requirement for DOLE transactions harebrained –Villanueva

PNP clearance requirement for DOLE transactions harebrained –Villanueva
(GMA News) Senator Joel Villanueva called a Philippine National Police (PNP) proposal that would require workers to first present a police clearance when transacting with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) “harebrained” and an “added burden to workers.”

Villanueva, chair of the Senate labor committee, said in a Saturday statement that the PNP proposal was not only incredulous but ran counter to President Rodrigo Duterte’s instruction to government offices to cut red tape.

“What the President has ordered and what the people want is less red tape and not more of it. What the PNP is proposing goes against this,” Villanueva said.

PNP chief Gen. Debold Sinas had proposed the requirement in a letter to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello.

Villanueva also saw no sense in requiring a jobless OFW, who was only seeking financial help from the DOLE, to make a detour to a police station.

“{DOLE offices are] not an apprehension place for the police where they can set up a dragnet for people who have unfinished business with authorities,” the senator pointed out.

There were other, better ways of apprehending people in trouble with the law, he added. “You go after them and not wait for them to walk into the precinct,” Villanueva said… Read More

I think buntis na ako no’n, I just found out that I was pregnant.

Read More
