[Only IN Hollywood] Thierry Fremaux ‘sure’ Cannes film fest in July will be in-person

[Only IN Hollywood] Thierry Fremaux ‘sure’ Cannes film fest in July will be in-person(Rappler) LOS ANGELES, USA

‘A film festival is about being together, fighting each other about a film, being in the same room and in two hours, critics decide the destiny of a film,’ he says “We are sure that Cannes will take place in July,” declared Thierry Fremaux, director of Cannes Film Festival in our recent video conversation.

Thierry vowed that the world’s most prestigious film festival, which he has led since 2004, will go live, in-person from July 6 to 17 this year.

He said in reference to the coronavirus pandemic which has impacted the world and forced the cancellation of many major live events, “We will have all the film festivals, which have been canceled, back. We can go back to the normal life by being there.”

The COVID-19 health crisis shut down the film fest on the Croisette last year. The only other time that the Cannes fest was canceled was in 1968 due to nationwide student riots, in which cinema gods Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut participated… Read More

Another Golden Age in PH Boxing?

Another Golden Age in PH Boxing?(PhilBoxing) Clockwise: Casimero, Gaballo, Dasmariñas and Donaire.

With two Filipinos holding part of the world bantamweight championship and two more getting the chance to join them, another golden age in Philippine boxing may be in the offing, this time anchored on the bantamweights.

Johnriel Casimero is the reigning WBO world bantamweight champion while fellow Pinoy Reymart Gaballo holds the interim belt in the World Boxing Council after serving in the same capacity for a time with the World Boxing Association.

Meanwhile, former multi division world champion Nonito Donaire, Jr. gets the chance to become world champion again as he takes on WBC regular titlist Nordine Oubaali of France on a date and venue still to be finalized.

On the other hand, former IBO world titleholder Michael Dasmariñas is scheduled to challenge WBA-IBF and Ring Magazine champion Naoya Inoue on June 19 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

We never had it so good as now.

In fact, this situation is unprecedented especially in the post war period following Luisito Espinosa’s initial success in the erstwhile waterloo division for Filipino fighters. Espinosa won officially the country’s first world crown at 118lbs in 1989 by shock first round knockout over Thailand’s Khaokor Galaxy in Bangkok.

Gerry Peñalosa followed suit in 2004 by wresting the WBO crown by late round body shot knockout of Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez. Donaire himself was two time world bantamweight champion, first in 2011 when he knocked out Mexican Fernando Montiel for the WBC and WBO unified belts which he vacated later and next in 2018 when he returned to 118 and won the WBA super belt by stopping UK’s Ryan Burnett. He lost that belt to Inoue in late 2019.

Casimero won the WBO title by second round knockout over the previously highly touted South African Zolani Tete in late 2019. He has defended the same last year, stopping previously undefeated Ghanaian challenger Duke Micah… Read More

'We aim high': Pinoy boxers preparing for gold medal charge in Tokyo
(ABS-CBN) MANILA, Philippines — The national boxing federation is ready to exhaust all of its resources to support the four Filipino boxers who will represent the country in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this July.

After Irish Magno and Eumir Marcial booked their tickets through the Asia-Oceania qualifiers in March 2020, Carlo Paalam and former world champion Nesthy Petecio also secured their berths through their world rankings last month.

“Ang parati naming sinasabi is, ‘aim high’,” said Ed Picson, secretary-general of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP), when asked for his projection for the Filipino boxers.

“We cannot lower our projections,” he stressed. “We will aim for the top plum.”

Even before Petecio and Paalam qualified, the federation was already optimistic of the country’s chances in the Olympic Games. Marcial, in particular, was seen as a gold medal hope, thanks to his performance in the qualifiers and his experience in the amateur ranks.

But having four boxers in the Summer Games bolsters Picson’s confidence that they can finally end the country’s medal drought… Read More
