(Bulatlat) MANILA – While the media industry in the country faces hundreds of attacks in the past six years under outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, the situation is no different for student publications in their respective campuses nationwide.

In Duterte’s last few weeks as president, state forces arrested over 90 individuals in broad daylight during a cultivation activity held by farmers of Hacienda Tinang in Tarlac province. Among them were two journalists and nine campus journalists who covered the event.

Campus journalist Denisse Macalino never imagined having to lock arms with farmers, activists, and media workers in an initially peaceful gathering to form a blockade against policemen who dragged them to a shuttle one by one.

“Kaming media, kahit nagpalista kami under media, di pa rin nirecognize. … Pero dahil tingin nila (pulis) kaya nila [kami arestuhin], kinuha nila,” Macalino said.

(Even we, part of the media, were not recognized despite our names listed under the media… But because [the police] knew they could [arrest us], they took us.)

The Basel Ban Amendment prohibits member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the European Union (EU), and Liechtenstein from exporting hazardous wastes to developing nations, whether or not for recycling. (Manila Bulletin) Reimagine Recycling, an annual program that aims to scale plastic waste solutions and promote a circular economy, is calling on individuals and groups that currently implement community-based plastic waste solution programs to submit proposals that it can support with up to ₱500,000 grant funding. Deadline for submission of entries is on July 15, 2022.

Now on its fourth year, Reimagine Recycling is a project of Save Philippine Seas and Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines that aims to help those with existing projects on preventing waste leakage in rivers and seas, mainstreaming gender sensitivity in waste management and improving the welfare of informal waste sector expand their projects through capacity building workshops on stakeholder management, communications, and business models, mentoring and financial grant funding.

To understand the evolution of the region’s online shoppers’ habits, every three (3) to five (5) years iPrice conducts a study of online consumer behaviour. The most recent study — “The State of Online Shoppers in Southeast Asia 2021/22” — is based on data from 125 million unique users on iPrice Group websites supporting e-commerce across six (6) key SEA markets (Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore). (Manila Bulletin) The romantic film “Ngayon Kaya”—starring rumored sweethearts Paulo Avelino and Janine Gutierrez as “almost lovers” trying to reclaim their past—had its premiere night at SM Megamall a day before the movie’s opening day of June 22.

Producers T-Rex Entertainment and Paulo’s own company, WASD Films, pulled out all the stops to herald the return of Filipino films in commercial theaters this year and make the premiere festive with a red carpet, soundtrack blaring from the speakers, win-premiere-tickets promotions, festive decor, a program and a mini-party right before the screening.

(Journal Online) The fourth week of June is celebrated as the National Poison Prevention Week as declared by Presidential Proclamation No. 1777 s. 2009 as an effort to raise awareness on the preventive aspects of poisoning prevention at home, school, work and the general environment.[1]

The study aimed to assess the availability of mercury-free alternatives in the Philippine market in view of the country’s commitments of phasing out mercury-containing products under the Minamata Convention on Mercury.[2]

The press briefing was joined by Jam Lorenzo, BAN Toxics’ Policy and Research Associate, and Geri-Geronimo Sañez, Chief of the Hazardous Waste Management Section of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), with the special participation of Elena Lymberidi of the Zero Mercury Working Group. The event was also attended by community women and BT Patrollers.

Lorenzo discussed the highlights of the mercury-free alternatives study, while Sañez presented a short overview of mercury and its health impacts as well as the Philippines’ commitments to the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

Funded by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), the study presented trade data obtained from relevant government agencies, as well as the results of monitoring major e-commerce platforms. (Interaksyon) As motorists cry over continued fuel price hikes, Filipino farmers face the same predicament.

Oil companies on Monday announced that they would implement another set of price increases for petroleum products effective Tuesday, June 21. This marks the third consecutive week of fuel price hikes.

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. and Seaoil Philippines Inc. informed consumers that they would raise the price per liter of gasoline by P0.80, diesel by P3.10, and kerosene by P1.70.

Roberto Umali, a 64-year-old farmer based in Nueva Ecija, is affected by the hike. Diesel, the primary mover of his irrigation machine, costs more than his family’s daily food expenses.

The farmer said a gallon of diesel would cost him P500, usually lasting only a day. His farmland needs to be supplied with a great amount of water every day to maintain moisture, mainly because it hasn’t been raining in their area for the past several days… Read More

She said some of these challenges include the winding cycle of poverty, the trauma of broken families, the life-long baggage because of irresponsible and bad parenting, the abandonment issues due to an absentee parent, the anguish of gender confusion and discrimination, the destruction brought about by drugs, and the lure of easy money in criminality.

Duterte also mentioned among the pressing issues involving the minors such as the increasing cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases among minors, and the failure to identify and speak up against different kinds of abuses, the life altering effects of teenage pregnancy, the detrimental effects of illiteracy, the emotional injury of bullying, unstable mental wellness, recruitment to support terrorism, and misinformation in the internet.

Duterte said the parents have a duty to teach their children the “values of integrity, discipline, respect, and compassion for others,” emphasizing that a strong, loving, happy family sets down all the basic foundations essential in the development and growth of a child.
