Julia Barretto, Dennis Padilla open up about old wounds that affected their father-daughter relationship

DENNIS ON JULIA’S CHANGE OF NAME PETITION

“Di ba, you went to court that you want to take off my family name? That was a dagger.

“Hindi lang dahil sa pangalan yun, ha? It’s not the pangalan itself, that’s my blood. Kaya masakit yun.

You are already well known as a Barretto. Bakit mo tatanggalin yung apelyido ko?”

DENNIS ON HIS TWO MARRIAGES

There’s a paper that I signed that Dianne is my daughter… Read More

China says its carrier group conducts exercise in South China Sea

China says its carrier group conducts exercise in South China Sea
(Reuters) BEIJING – China’s Shandong aircraft carrier task group recently conducted an exercise in the South China Sea, the country’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said on Sunday.

China has repeatedly complained about United States Navy ships getting close to islands it occupies in the South China Sea, where Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan all also have competing claims.

U.S. carrier groups have sailed near Chinese-controlled islands in the disputed waters several times this year, drawing denunciation from China.

The exercise was described as routine training and part of the Chinese navy’s annual work plan. The Shandong entered service in 2019 and is the newer of China’s two carriers.

“It is completely legitimate and beneficial in improving the country’s ability to uphold national sovereignty and security,” Gao Xiucheng, a spokesman from the PLA navy said in a statement.

Gao said China hopes the world will see the exercise from an objective and rational viewpoint. He said the Chinese navy will continue conducting such exercises according to its schedule.

China’s navy said last month similar drills will come more regularly amid escalating tensions with the island of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its sovereign territory… Read More

Not even pandemic can stop 2022 polls – Comelec

Not even pandemic can stop 2022 polls – Comelec
(PhilStar) MANILA, Philippines — Not even the raging COVID-19 pandemic can stop the 2022 elections, according to Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesman James Jimenez.

“Comelec can suspend elections or declare failure of elections when it becomes impossible to hold free and fair elections,” Jimenez said yesterday on his official twitter account @jabjimenez.

Jimenez’s statement was in response to a question from Twitter user @OinkLife who asked him if the poll body can justify the cancellation in the light of developments in India.

India is currently facing an overwhelming number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths mostly attributed to the ongoing elections in the country.

Jimenez emphasized that the Comelec can only suspend elections or declare failure of elections if the polling precincts were destroyed or rendered useless.

“No cancellation justified if only (due to) fear,” he said.

He pointed out there is only one year and eight days left before the 2022 national and local elections.

Asked if some politicians have possibly committed electioneering when they go around supposedly to showcase their platforms of governance, Jimenez replied in the negative.

He said there are no official candidates yet and the campaign period has not yet begun.

“Legally there is no violation of the ban on premature campaigning and electioneering,” he said, but added that what they are doing “should not be rewarded.”

In another development, the Comelec said on its official website there were only 151 days to go before the last day of voter registration… Read More

Philippines receives first batch of Russia's Sputnik V vaccines
(Reuters) MANILA – The Philippines received its first batch of Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine on Saturday, the presidential office said.

The 15,000 doses of Sputnik V, developed by Russia’s Gamaleya Institute, will be used in four cities in the capital region, the Philippines’ coronavirus hotspot, the health ministry said.

It was supposed to arrive on April 25, but was delayed by logistical issues.

The Philippines is negotiating to buy 20 million doses of Sputnik V, as part of its target to inoculate up to 70 million adults this year.

It has so far received 4.04 million vaccine doses, more than 86% of which were from China’s Sinovac Biotech and the rest from AstraZeneca through the COVAX facility. More than 1.8 million doses had been administered as of April 27, government data showed.

With nearly 1.05 million infections and 17,354 deaths, the Philippines is battling one of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks in Asia… Read More

Labor Day playlist: 10 Filipino songs to honor our workers

Labor Day playlist: 10 Filipino songs to honor our workers
(Rappler) MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Celebrate and honor workers by listening to Filipino songs that document and pay tribute to their struggles

8-hour workday, minimum wage, paid vacation and sick leaves, overtime pay, health benefits, and of course, the weekend — these are only several of the rights and privileges we owe to the labor movement and those who continue to fight for working people.

While mass gatherings are limited under the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine, it should not deter us from celebrating the historic struggles and achievements of the working class, even while staying home.

So here are 10 Filipino songs to commemorate International Workers’ Day on May 1:

“Araw ng Manggagawa” by Tambisan sa Sining, a Labor Day anthem that celebrates the heroism of the workers. Noted for progressive music that reflects the struggles of the workers, Tambisan also took part in the founding of the Kilusang Mayo Uno in 1980. Some of their songs include “Busabos ng Puhunan,” “Patay Na ang Kabayo,” “Kontraktuwalisasyon,” “Awit ng Pag-Asa,” and “Dakilang Pakikibaka.”

“Sandaang Taon” by Musikang Bayan. Composed by Danny Fabella with vocals provided by Empiel Palma and Bayang Barrios, the song commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Philippine labor movement through the founding of Unión Obrera Democrática Filipina (Democratic Workers Union of the Philippines) on February 2, 1902… Read More

EXCLUSIVE: Meet Paul Abadilla, the Pinoy behind the world of ‘Soul’

EXCLUSIVE: Meet Paul Abadilla, the Pinoy behind the world of 'Soul'
(ABS-CBN) When H.E.R. won the Best Original Song category for her song “Fight for you” in the Oscars, Filipinos were beaming with pride — another Filipino showcasing world-class talent. But there’s another reason to celebrate.

Meet Paul Abadilla, the set art director of the Oscar-winning animated movie “Soul.”

This California-based artist migrated to the United States when he was seven years old. But in his childhood years in the Philippines, he was engrossed with cartoons and animation.

“It was drawing and all these cartoons that I’ve been watching, [it] is a way for me to escape and just really enjoy myself. And I’m just in the zone when I’m drawing,” he told ABS-CBN News.

Abadilla pursued his passion and when the doors of the animated film studio Pixar opened, he grabbed the opportunity to get his dream job.

“When I first started on the project, I started as a set designer. That’s what I’ve been doing most of my time in Pixar, I design the backgrounds, the world on our films. And few months in, I was promoted to set art director and that was a game changer, because now I have this larger responsibility of really setting the tone, the visual language of the film, helping our set designers flesh it out. The designs, the drawing, so we can work with our technical team, so they can build this environment,” he said.

And build they did. The project was a tall order for Abadilla, but he accepted the challenge. If you’ve seen the film, there were two worlds created — the real world and the pre-“Soul” one.

“I look at every frame, every shot, throughout the film to make sure that our sets are looking really good without distracting from the main characters,” Abadilla shared… Read More
