Filipino activists appeal to British banks over region devastated by oil spill

Filipino activists appeal to British banks over region devastated by oil spill
(Guardian London) Campaigners from the Philippines have urged British banks not to fund the expansion of fossil fuel use in their country. It follows a huge oil spill that threatened a globally important marine biodiversity hotspot.

Filipino environmentalists have travelled to the UK to meet representatives from Barclays, Standard Chartered and HSBC as part of efforts to stop the expansion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plants and terminals in and around the Verde Island Passage, a global marine biodiversity hotspot known for its whale sharks, corals, turtles and rich fisheries, which was badly affected by the oil spill this year.

In February, the Princess Empress oil tanker sank off the east coast of Mindoro island and released 800,000 litres of heavy industrial oil into the sea. The 75-mile slick devastated hundreds of fishing communities on Mindoro, leaving local people requiring medical treatment… Read More

Why have the United States and Philippines issued defence treaty guidelines?

Why have the United States and Philippines issued defence treaty guidelines?
(Reuters) The United States and the Philippines have agreed on new guidelines for their 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty, following multiple requests by Manila to make clear the conditions under which Washington would come to its defence.

WHY DID THE PHILIPPINES WANT CLARIFICATION?
Though the United States has reassured the Philippines their defence partnership is “ironclad”, Manila has argued the seven-decade-old treaty needs updating to reflect a different global security environment.

The renewed pushunder President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who is in Washington this week, came as the Philippines complains of an increase in aggressive behaviour in the South China Sea by Chinese coast guard and fishing vessels suspected of being maritime militia.

The Philippines, which relies heavily on energy imports, is also keen to start exploiting natural gas reserves in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) that China also lays claim to.

In seeking clarity about when its former colonial ruler would come to its rescue, the Philippines wanted a clear commitment from its ally and for China to back off… Read More

Philippines' top central banker calls on ADB members to enhance multilateral cooperation against crisi
(Korea Times) The member countries of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) should continue to enhance multilateral financial cooperation to ensure sufficient liquidity and foreign exchange reserves against possible economic crisis, the top central banker of the Philippines said.

In an exclusive interview with The Korea Times, Felipe Medalla, the governor of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) ― the Philippines’ central bank ― also said expanding Korea’s trade with the Philippines will be helpful on the region’s path to financial inclusion.

“The nature of financial cooperation, especially when it comes to do with liquidity and reserves, is pooling resources. So, clearly, cooperation is more effective in times of crisis if it is on a multilateral level,” Medalla said Wednesday as he was attending the 56th annual meeting of the ADB.

The meeting is taking place at Songdo Convensia in Inchon’s Songdo International Business District on a four-day run through Friday.

Medalla made his remark in line with the ASEAN+3 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting that took place, Tuesday, on the occasion of the ADB gathering… Read More

(DohaNews) Filipino expat Romil Putong Abule broke the record of the ‘Fastest crossing of Qatar on foot (male)’ after accomplishing the feat in one day, eight hours, and 59 minutes, Guinness World Record confirmed.

Guinness contacted Abule last week to inform him that his application had been approved seven months after attempting to be the ‘Fastest crossing of Qatar on foot (male)’.

“I cannot describe how happy I am because, to be honest, I really didn’t expect to finish it,” the 35-year told Gulf Times, adding that Doha’s hot weather in October did not stop him from achieving his goal.

Abule had no prior sporting experience before moving to Qatar, but he decided to start running to combat homesickness. Since then, he has frequently competed in a number of races in Qatar.

“This was the start of his sporting journey and the next thing he knew, he has been doing it throughout the past 10 years. His goal is to be recognised as one of the best Filipino runners in Qatar,” Guinness World Records noted, adding that Abule wanted to challenge himself and serve as an inspiration to his community… Read More

Man to face building explosion charge
(The Royal Gazette) A man is expected in court today to be charged in connection with a fatal explosion at an apartment block in Southampton exactly a year ago. The blast at Hilltop Court claimed the lives of Oscar and Jove Mascarinas, a couple from the Philippines. Police and fire investigators spent months examining the incident, which happened at about 8.50pm on May 2, 2022.

Their findings were presented to the Department of Public Prosecutions earlier this year for a decision to be made on whether there would be a public prosecution. Cindy Clarke, the Director of Public Prosecutions, told The Royal Gazette last week: “I can advise that a prosecution has been approved, and the defendant will appear in plea court on May 2.”..
