BI inspects dredging vessels in Manila Bay reclamation sites
(Journal Online) Conducted with the Philippine Coast Guard, the inspection led by officers of the BI’s Bay Service Section and Intelligence Division also came following an order by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., suspending all reclamation activities in Manila Bay. The Department of Environment and Natural Resource (DENR) likewise pledged to conduct community impact assessment to ensure that the reclamation will be implemented within the bounds of the law.

BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the inspection was conducted to ensure that foreign nationals involved in the project are compliant with immigration laws.

“Apart from the national government being concerned with the project, we also want to do our share by inspecting foreigners on board said vessels to confirm their compliance with immigration laws,” said Tansingco, adding that foreign nationals that conduct commercial activities in the Philippines are required to secure a work visa or permit… Read More

Sampling Filipino Fare with ‘Here Lies Love’s Melody Butiu
(NYO) Lumpia Shanghai, pork skewers marinated in a classic banana ketchup-based BBQ sauce, and beef sliders dressed with a traditional slaw on ube buns. These were among the dishes that the actress, Melody Butiu, suggested we try at the Lower East Side eatery, Kayle, which specializes in on-the-go Filipino fare. It’s a steamy, humid morning when we meet a few hours before she’s due at the Broadway Theater ahead of a two-show day of the ambitious new musical, Here Lies Love, which opened on July 20.

Butiu plays Estrella Cumpas in the show—written by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim—which tells the story of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, the former president and First Lady of the Philippines whose reign lasted from 1965 to 1986. In her role, Butiu portrays something of a caregiver to Imelda whose storytelling purpose is to show how an earnest and optimistic young woman could turn her back on her past in pursuit of power, wealth and position… Read More

China tells Philippines to remove grounded warship in South China Sea

China tells Philippines to remove grounded warship in South China Sea
(Interaksyon) BEIJING/MANILA— China told the Philippines on Monday to remove its grounded warship from the Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea after blocking two Manila supply ships with water cannons over the weekend as both sides asserted their claims of the area.

The Philippines accused the Chinese coast guard of blocking and water-cannoning a Philippine military supply ship on what it said was a routine troop rotation and resupply mission on Saturday for the Philippine warship, a rusty World War Two-era American ship that a handful of troops live aboard.

China said it had earlier told Manila not to send ships to the Second Thomas Shoal and not to send “construction materials used for large-scale repair and reinforcement” to the warship after it learned of this recent supply plan, the Chinese coast guard said in a statement on Monday… Read More

Chinese fire water cannons at Philippine Coast Guard in disputed sea
(RFA) CManila on Sunday protested the China Coast Guard’s use of water cannons against a Philippine Coast Guard vessel escorting civilian supply boats delivering goods to a military post in the South China Sea.

The Filipino vessels were on a mission Saturday to deliver food, water, fuel and other supplies to troops stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre when the incident occurred near Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal). The World War II-era naval ship was deliberately run aground in the shoal in 1999 to serve as the country’s military post there.

Manila “strongly condemns the China Coast Guard’s (CCG’s) dangerous maneuvers and illegal use of water cannons against the PCG vessels escorting the indigenous boats chartered by the Armed Forces of the Philippines yesterday, 05 August 2023,” Commodore Jay Tarriela, the coast guard spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, said in a statement… Read More

Plan, prepare, prevail: ‘Gibo’ seeks to redefine OCD’s role in disaster response and readiness

Plan, prepare, prevail: ‘Gibo’ seeks to redefine OCD’s role in disaster response and readiness
(BusinessMirror) AS the country beefs up its disaster response capabilities, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” C. Teodoro Jr. wants the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), one of the attached agencies under him, to act as a “bridge” between the national and local government units (LGU) in times of disasters and calamities.

“Now, on our part what we want to be is the ‘bridge’ between concerted national government assistance and efforts in all these aspects and the local government units. That is what the OCD is all about,” he said during the post-State-of-the-Nation Address briefing on July 26.

Doing this role merely means increasing the OCD’s capacity of marshaling and coordinating all efforts related to disaster response, Teodoro said.

And as of this time, the defense chief said the OCD is now “increasing its coordinative functions” to allow it to get real-time data and information needed for making critical and timely decisions in times of disasters in case LGUs are overwhelmed… Read More
