Philippines President Marcos defends father's martial law legacy
(AsiaOne) MANILA – Philippines leader Ferdinand Marcos Jr on Tuesday (Sept 13) defended his late father’s imposition of martial law when in power, saying it was necessary because he was simultaneously fighting communist and separatist rebellions at that time.

Marcos, son of Ferdinand Marcos Sr who was overthrown in a 1986 popular uprising, said his father declared martial law not to stay in power but because the “government had to defend itself”.

“Martial law was declared because of the wars, the two wars we were fighting on two fronts,” Marcos said in his first interview since his landslide victory in a May election.

“Those were the dangers, the perils the country was facing,” Marcos said, as various groups including victims of human rights abuses, prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of martial law on Sept 21.

His remarks are likely to bolster the concerns of critics that Marcos Jr has no intention of distancing himself from the tenure of his father and that this could pose risks to democracy in the Philippines… Read More

How Filipino workers fare in mental health, job satisfaction, quality of life
(Interaksyon) Most employees in the Philippines still feel “good” about their mental health, better than those in two other countries in Southeast Asia, according to recent data.

Mileau Insight, a Southeast Asian consumer research company, and Intellect, a mental health company, released the findings of this study titled “Hustle Culture” on September 13.

In the study, the Philippines has the most number of employees who find their mental health on a positive note with at least 78% of them rating it to be “good”, “very good” or “excellent.

This data is higher compared to only 68% of Indonesians and 57% of Singaporeans who rated their mental health this way.

Engagement: In the study, most Filipino employees (56%) spend or engage more with their work as compared to their counterparts in Indonesia (52%) and Singapore (42%)… Read More

Meet the 78-year-old bringing authentically Filipino care to Sacramento-area seniors

Meet the 78-year-old bringing authentically Filipino care to Sacramento-area seniors
(New York Public Radio) Seventy-eight-year-old Angelita Perez is a working senior who truly cares about the men and women of her generation as they walk through the sunset of their lives. She owns and still opts to be an active caregiver at Hillcrest Care, a small assisted living facility she founded in 2014 in El Dorado Hills, Calif.

What looks like a middle-class residence perched on the elevated suburban outskirts of El Dorado Hills — which lies 30 miles to the east of California’s capital of Sacramento — is actually a haven for six male seniors, five aged 85-97 and a 52-year-old Navy veteran under hospice care. With most assisted living facilities and nursing homes tending to at least 20 wards, Hillcrest Care is a much smaller operation.

But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in better care and homelier ambience — Perez says that, in such an intimate setting, seniors’ needs are more easily monitored and served. Helping frail seniors perform even the most basic chores may be easier said than done, but Perez — who goes by “Lita” to friends and family and “Angel” to a grateful patient’s family — mastered the work with a natural ease..
