Pacquiao Vows Philippine Fishermen Will Not Be ‘Bullied’ by China If Elected President
(The Epoch Times) Philippine boxing icon turned presidential candidate Manny Pacquiao vowed Friday to protect Filipino fishermen from being “bullied” by Chinese coastguards in the disputed South China Sea if elected president.

Pacquiao said that he would deploy navy ships to the disputed area of the sea, where Chinese coastguard vessels have repeatedly harassed and driven away Filipino fishermen, if he won the presidency in the May 9 election.

“I dare you, bother the Filipino fishermen and I’m the one you would have to face,” he said in an interview with Reuters. “To be bullied is not in my vocabulary.”

Pacquiao also expressed his admiration for the Philippines’ relationship with the United States, a country he referred to as “our best friend.”

The retired boxer is trailing in fourth place at 6 percent in the presidential survey conducted by Pulse Asia, well behind Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who is leading with 56 percent. Marcos is the son and namesake of the country’s late dictator.

But Pacquiao appeared unperturbed by his low rating, saying that “the real survey is on the election day,” and that he believes the poor will decide the election result, Philippine-based news agency Inquirer Net reported

“I am fighting to fight for the country’s future, especially for the poor. I and my supporters will not be disheartened. We will continue to knock on every door, community, town, and province to share our plans in alleviating our country from poverty,” he said at a press conference.

China claims much of the South China Sea as its own, including the stretch of water in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, that extends 200 nautical miles from its coast.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines in 2016. But the verdict has had little impact on China’s behavior, with Beijing continuing to pursue its claims to vast swathes of the sea based on its so-called “nine-dash line.”

Filipino fishermen have previously called on their government to assert its claim and provide them with better protection, claiming that Chinese coastguards blocked them from operating in the disputed waters.

But President Rodrigo Duterte said in May last year that the country’s arbitral victory against China’s claims at The Hague was nothing more than just “a piece of paper” that he would throw away in a trash bin due to its futility.

“They filed a case and we won. In real life, between nations, that paper is nothing. If you give it to me, I will tell you ‘[expletive] that is only a paper.’ I will throw that in a wastebasket,” Duterte said in Filipino, CNN Philippines reported… Read More

Pinoy boxers rule Thailand Open

Pinoy boxers rule Thailand Open
(Daily Tribune) PHUKET, Thailand — Filipino boxers Rogen Ladon, Riza Pasuit and Hergie Bacyadan snagged gold medals to lead the Philippines’ triumphant campaign in the 2022 Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament on Saturday at the posh Angsana Laguna Phuket Resort Hotel here.

The reigning Southeast Asian (SEA) Games flyweight king Ladon earned the nod of three judges for a 3-2 split decision upset over defending Asian Games titlist and 2019 AIBA World Championships silver winner Amit Panghal of India.

Ladon, a Rio de Janeiro Olympics veteran, fought methodically to clinch points in the first two rounds before surviving a late flurry from Amit in the final round.

Later on, 30th SEA Games silver medal finisher Pasuit dictated the tempo right from the get-go with solid counterpunching against Italy’s Alessia Mesiano to rule the women’s lightweight division.

“I’m very happy. I expected the experience from Rogen to come out today. As for Riza, she is a very good counter-puncher and a great boxer moving forward,” said national boxing team head coach Don Abnett, who is accompanied by coaches Roel Velasco, Ronald Chavez, Reynaldo Galido and Mitchel Martinez… Read More

Trolls, Disinformation Make Philippine Election Coverage a Challenge

Trolls, Disinformation Make Philippine Election Coverage a Challenge
(VC) Journalists covering May’s presidential election in the Philippines say false news and online attacks are making reporting a challenge.

As candidates, including front-runner Ferdinand Marcos Jr., vie to take the helm from Rodrigo Duterte, disinformation is ramping up.

The Philippines is seen as a testing ground for disinformation campaigns and is often referred to as “Patient Zero” by analysts tracking the spread of false news.

Journalists covering the election and politics further describe a hostile environment fostered toward media by Duterte and his supporters, and online trolling and attacks.

The country’s Presidential Communications Operations Office did not immediately respond to VOA’s request for comment.

For Jervis Manahan, a news reporter at the ABS-CBN media network, “the biggest challenge is disinformation.”

“Fake news has become so believable that the public thinks it’s true. It has become so pervasive in society,” he told VOA via email.

Manahan has been covering the campaign of Vice President Leni Robredo, which has been plagued by online disinformation since she announced her candidacy… Read More

Bother Filipino fishermen and you’d face me, Pacquiao warns China

Bother Filipino fishermen and you’d face me, Pacquiao warns China
(Free Malaysia Today) MANILA: Shrugging off his low rating in opinion polls, Philippine politician and former boxing star Manny Pacquiao says his impoverished roots make him the best person to be president, as he warned voters to avoid corruption-tainted candidates.

Pacquiao questioned why people supported Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the current frontrunner for the May 9 vote, pointing to the plundering of the country’s wealth during the harsh authoritarian rule of his late father and namesake.

“The root cause of our country’s problem is corruption and then we would vote for a candidate who has been tainted by corruption? What happened to us as a nation? Where is our intelligence?” Pacquiao said in an interview with Reuters yesterday.

Pacquiao is trailing in fourth place on 6% in the latest opinion poll, well behind Marcos, who is leading with 56%… Read More

Bidding for Meralco’s 850MW RE demand declared a failure
(Business Mirror) THE competitive bidding for the 850-megawatt (MW) renewable energy (RE) mid-merit requirement of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) was declared a failure last Thursday by the Third-Party Bids and Awards Committee (TPBAC).

There was no bid offer received on the April 5 deadline to challenge the unsolicited proposal of Terra Solar Philippines Inc.

Terra Solar is the special purpose vehicle of Razon-led Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. and Solar Philippines Power Project Holdings Inc. led by Leandro Leviste.

According to the TPBAC, there were no comparative bids received on Tuesday even if two interested bidders initially expressed interest to participate in the bidding. These are SMC Global Light and Power (SGLP) and SunAsia Energy Inc.

SGLP wrote and notified the TPBAC that it would no longer participate in the 850MW CSP. SunAsia, meanwhile, did not submit a bid but instead submitted and read a “Notice of Non-Submission of Bid.”

SunAsia manifested its interest to participate in the next round of Competitive Selection Process (CSP), should there be any. The TPBAC will welcome its participation, it said… Read More

Harrowing photos show overcrowded & disease-ridden Philippines prisons as Brit ‘mob boss’ faces dying in jail
(The Sun) THESE chilling photos show the overcrowded and disease-ridden prison in the Philippines a Brit mob boss is being locked up in.

Darren Wall, 44, was arrested with his wife Khanary Jane Abejo, 23, in a nightclub in Manila in March for allegedly brandishing a gun.

He was reportedly found with six grams of cocaine along with a 9mm Beretta pistol – but Wall denies any wrongdoing and claims the gun wasn’t his.

Cops claim the East Londoner was the leader of a brutal gang operating in the capital’s notorious red light district and want him behind bars for 18 years without parole over alleged drug dealings and extortion rackets.

Wall faces dying in Quezon City Jail, which is almost five times over capacity, leaving inmates stewing in their own filth.

The prison in the Philippine’s capital was built for just 800 but now has 3,800 inmates… Read More
