New LPA spotted west of Palawan

New LPA spotted west of Palawan
(The Manila Times) THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Saturday that a new low pressure area (LPA) was spotted off Palawan.

Weather specialist Ana Clauren told The Manila Times the LPA was last tracked some 405 kilometers west of Coron, also in the province.

“It is embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) affecting Luzon and Visayas,” she said.

Although inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the Pagasa forecaster said the weather disturbance may eventually dissipate and would not affect most parts of the country.

Asked about the weather conditions all over the country in the next few days, Clauren said Pagasa did not see any disturbance entering PAR except for some isolated rain showers and thunderstorms, especially in Northern Luzon.

The state-run weather agency said Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms due to ITCZ and localized thunderstorms… Read More

3 Filipino Companies Make it to List of World’s Best Workplaces in 2021

3 Filipino Companies Make it to List of World's Best Workplaces in 2021
(Esquire Philippines) In the world post-pandemic, reputation is just as important as profit margins when it comes to business. Potential workers, investors, and even the general public are looking for companies that provide work-life balance, competitive benefits, and an overall good experience for their employees. The pandemic and almost year-long lockdown in some countries have emphasized the employer’s impact on the employee’s quality of life, and we predict that importance will only increase in the years to come.

In the latest Forbes list, the business magazine partnered with market research company Statista to find the best workplaces in the world in 2021.

Three Philippine companies made the list: Jollibee Food Corp. at 256th place, Ayala Corp. at 487th place, and Aboitiz Equity Ventures at 665th place. The three local companies are the only Philippine businesses to make it to the list, which says a lot about employee satisfaction.

Forbes and Statista surveyed 150,000 full-time and part-time workers from 58 countries working at international companies. The participants were asked to rate how much they’d be willing to recommend their place of work to friends and family, and to evaluate other employers in their industry.

A total of 750 companies made it to the Forbes list, with 236 coming from the U.S. alone. Germany was the next most represented company with 91 companies, followed by China with 57. But it was none of the above that placed first on the list. That honor went to South Korea as the country’s tech giant Samsung was named the best workplace in the world in 2021. .. Read More

Big-screen movies back Oct. 16, but forget popcorn

Big-screen movies back Oct. 16, but forget popcorn
(The Manila Times) MORE than a year since shutting down operations, cinemas in the National Capital Region (NCR) are finally allowed to reopen on October 16, given the Inter-Agency Task Force’s (IATF) decision to downgrade the area’s Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) Alert Level from the highest of 4 to a less restrictive 3.

There remain, of course, very clear parameters mandated by the government as to the extent of operations following the resumption. After all, Covid-19 still remains a threat here and around the world.

Cinemas and movie houses can only allow 30-percent seating capacity and sell tickets to individuals who can show documents to prove they are fully vaccinated. Moreover, the one-seat apart protocol needs strict implementation at every showing, as well as the use of facemaks for guests and staff at all times. Additionally, eating inside the theater is prohibited so forget about buying popcorn… Read More

Robredo-Pangilinan tandem bares senatorial slate, 12th spot up for grabs
(CNN Philippines) — The tandem of Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Kiko Pangilinan on Friday released their senatorial line-up which included incumbent or former lawmakers, lawyers, and a veteran politician who faced corruption investigations.

The tandem, which hails themselves as the “true opposition,” will field 11 candidates for now, including six guest bets. They are coming from at least seven different political parties, with only three belonging from the Liberal Party.

It includes former Senator Sonny Trillanes, Senator Risa Hontiveros, detained Senator Leila de Lima, human rights defender Chel Diokno, former Baguio Rep. Teddy Baguilat, and lawyer Alex Lacson — who dropped his plan to run for vice president to prevent splitting the votes with Pangilinan.

Their tandem will also endorse guest candidates namely reelectionist Senators Richard Gordon, Migz Zubiri, and Joel Villanueva, Sorsogon Gov. Chiz Escudero, and former Vice President Jejomar Binay.

The five are also part of the initial senatorial slate of the Ping Lacson-Tito Sotto and Manny Pacquiao-Lito Atienza tandems… Read More

Voter applicants form long lines again as registration resumes

(GMA News) The registration of voters resumed on Monday with voter applicants forming long lines again before dawn in some areas in Metro Manila.

In Quezon City, some voters showed up as early as midnight at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Barangay Sto. Cristo, according to a report by James Agustin on Unang Balita.

Because it was still curfew, they were asked to stay at the barangay hall first.

At 4 a.m., they were allowed to start falling in line on Nueva Vizcaya Street.

Voters said they are grateful that the Comelec extended the registration of voters until October 30 so they could exercise their right to vote in Eleksyon 2022.

Some of them have tried to register before for three or four times but did not make it to the cutoff.

Voters came with food and chairs, ready for the long wait. They were finally allowed to fall in line outside the Comelec office at 6 a.m. Registration will start at 8 a.m.

Barangay personnel continuously reminded voters to observe physical distancing.

(The Manila Times) AN information technology executive, a former chief of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and a former movie actor were among incumbents and wannabes from Nueva Ecija province who filed their certificates of candidacy (CoCs) last October 8, the deadline for the filing of the document.

Google and Facebook contractor Larry Soriano Ponce filed his CoC for mayor of General Natividad town together with his party mate Emelita Manahan, who is seeking reelection as vice mayor.

Ponce, a farmer during his childhood, said he would want to help farmers in his town as he knew how hard it was when he was one.

As Austech Construction Corp. president and general contractor, he put up the system integrator of Australian Telstra that builds and operates telecommunications networks for local voice, mobile phones and internet connection, among others.

During the filing, Ponce was seen accompanied by Nueva Ecija Gov. Aurelio Umali.
