(GMA News) Three million additional doses of government-procured Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine arrived in the country on Sunday.

The additional supply of vaccines arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 past 6 p.m.

The Philippines officially rolled out its vaccination program on March 1.

Vaccine brands delivered to the Philippines to date include Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, Sinovac, AstraZeneca, and Sputnik V.

(GMA News) Over 18 million Filipinos have so far been vaccinated against COVID-19 since the national inoculation program started on March 1, a Department of Health official said Sunday.

Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje on On Dobol B TV said the Philippines has administered nearly 41 million doses of various COVID-19 vaccines based on the September 18, 2021 record.

As for vaccine supply, the country has so far received over 59 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from several international manufacturers, she added.

(GMA News) Japan’s embassy in Manila on Tuesday confirmed that its government has received information on possible terror attacks in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines.

“We confirm that the Japanese government has received information about a possible terror attack, but we cannot give you any detailed background at the moment,” the Japanese Embassy said in a statement.

” In relation to this, we issued a warning to alert Japanese people residing in some Southeast Asian countries, but we cannot disclose the source.”

On Monday, Japan warned its citizens against possible attacks in six Southeast Asian countries—the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar— and urged them to avoid “Western-owned” facilities, such as hotels and restaurants, and religious sites.

“We ask all Japanese residents to remain vigilant against terrorist attacks,” it added.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said it obtained information on “increased risks such as suicide bombings.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was not informed by the embassy on this matter. However, it added, countries can issue travel alerts for its citizens.

“[T]his type of information may have been shared among intelligence agencies,” it said.

The Department of Defense, meanwhile, said that it is working to validate the information, while the Armed Forces and the Philippine National Police said that no threats have been monitored in the country.

(GMA News) The International Criminal Court on Wednesday authorized the start of its investigation into the killings in the Philippines’ war on drugs.

In a statement, the ICC said that its Pre-Trial Chamber 1 has granted then-Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda’s June 14 request to probe crimes “allegedly committed on the territory of the Philippines between 1 November 2011 and 16 March 2019 in the context of the so-called ‘war on drugs’ campaign.”

The ICC said that a “specific legal element of crime against humanity of murder” has been met with respect to Duterte’s war on drugs in the period from July 1, 2016—the day after President Rodrigo Duterte was sworn into office as chief executive—until March 16, 2019, the day before the Philippines formally exited the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC.

It has also been met “with respect to the killings in the Davao area between 1 November 2011 and 30 June 2016.”

“The Chamber emphasized that, based on the facts as they emerge at the present stage and subject to proper investigation and further analysis, the so-called ‘war on drugs’ campaign cannot be seen as a legitimate law enforcement operation, and the killings neither as legitimate nor as mere excesses in an otherwise legitimate operation. Rather, the available material indicates, to the required standard, that a widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population took place pursuant to or in furtherance of a State policy, within the meaning of Article 7(1) and (2)(a) of the Statute,” the ICC added.

(BusinessWorld) THE Philippines registered the highest levels of stress regarding individual finances in the Asia Pacific, according to a survey commissioned by banking software solutions company Backbase.

In its “State of Banking and Financial Wellness in Asia Pacific” study released Wednesday, managing debt was reported to be a challenge for 70% of Philippine respondents, well above the average for nine economies of 49%.

“Compared with the rest of APAC consumers, Filipinos are the most stressed about their current financial situation. They also feel more anxious and uncertain. One source of this anxiety is debt,” according to the study.

The survey indicated that 51% of Filipino respondents were “stressed” about their current financial situation, while only 39% and 46% gave as their answers “comfortable” and “informed,” respectively.

“Surveyed consumers from countries with lower levels of financial literacy report feeling stressed and overwhelmed by their financial

situation. The research also reveals that consumers over the age of 50 are more anxious, uncertain, and pessimistic about their financial situation compared with other age groups,” it said.

Other top concerns for Filipinos concern building up savings, with 58% of those surveyed reporting struggles, while 52% expressed worries about planning for retirement.

The study found dissatisfaction with banks in terms of providing financial management tools, encouraging better financial habits, and identifying risk.

“While Filipino banks are focusing their efforts on providing financial literacy tools, less than 50% of Filipino banks are focusing on the other two needs. Banks that simplify financial wellness and provide personalized solutions will help to address debt and, in the long run, build customer loyalty,” it said.

The study found that 70% of Philippine banks reported difficulties in keeping up with customer expectations while sustaining their profitability and relevance, significantly higher than the regional average of just 63%.

“Another major challenge is increased competition and disruption from new industry entrants. In order to stay ahead, Filipino banks should follow the example of banks in other countries and learn from global experience,” it said… Read More
