Michaels are most generous 5-star reviewer tourists in the Philippines

Michaels are most generous 5-star reviewer tourists in the Philippines
(Interaksyon) A report found that individuals named Michael are the most likely tourists to leave five-star reviews in the Philippines.

In February, global remittance provider Remitly revealed the top ten names that are most likely to leave 5-star reviews on the travel comparison website, Tripadvisor.

According to its data, Michaels are typically the most generous with five-star reviews when visiting the Philippines, leading them to be dubbed the country’s anti-Karen.

The name Karen gained popularity on social media since 2018 and refers to a nickname for privileged, middle-aged women who enjoy involving themselves in other people’s business, complaining, and asking to speak to the manager, according to Remitly.

Michael appears to be the antithesis of the “Karen” meme as they seem to leave positive reviews and praise the services they availed and experiences they had… Read More

Marcos says bases cannot be used for offensive action

Marcos says bases cannot be used for offensive action
(RTHK) The Philippines will not allow “any offensive actions” from the bases it has opened to US troops, President Ferdinand Marcos said on Monday.

Manila last week announced the locations of four more military bases it is allowing the US military to use on top of the five agreed on under the 2014 Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement, known as EDCA.

The deal allows US troops to rotate through and store defence equipment and supplies.

China warned last week the expanded military deal could endanger regional peace, and accused Washington of a “zero-sum mentality”.

The four additional bases include sites near the hotly disputed South China Sea and another not far from Taiwan.

Marcos said China’s reaction over the expanded military deal was “not surprising”, but assured them the Philippines is only shoring up its territorial defence… Read More

Philippines sets June auction for new 11,600 megawatts renewables capacity

Philippines sets June auction for new 11,600 megawatts renewables capacity
(Interaksyon) MANILA— The Philippines will in June auction rights to build up to 11,600 megawatts of new power capacity from renewable sources in the next three years, the Department of Energy said, as it seeks to gradually reduce its reliance on coal.

The additional capacity will come from solar, onshore wind, biomass and waste-to-energy resources.

The ministry has invited bidders for 3,600 MW of new capacity to be installed in 2024, 3,600 MW in 2025, and 4,400 MW in 2026, under the second round of its Green Energy Auction program.

The targeted additional capacity is more than five times the 2,000 MW offered at the first auction last year, when a total of 19 contracts were awarded to various developers, including solar energy provider SP New Energy SPNEC.PS.

The ministry did not provide investment figures for the auctions. The Southeast Asian country aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources in its energy mix to 35% by 2030 and to 50% by 2040, from 22% currently… Read More

Manila, Kuala Lumpur to negotiate with Beijing in South China Sea

Manila, Kuala Lumpur to negotiate with Beijing in South China Sea
(Radio Free Asia) Malaysia and the Philippines have said that they’re willing to discuss oil and gas exploration with China in the South China Sea, a move that analysts say may cause friction within ASEAN as the Southeast Asian bloc wants to accelerate negotiations for a Code of Conduct in order to avoid conflict.

On Tuesday the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said Manila would resume talks with Beijing on joint oil and gas exploration in the South China Sea, despite the country’s Supreme Court already having ruled against such activities.

The court in January decided that a trilateral joint exploration agreement between the Philippines, China and Vietnam – another party in the South China Sea dispute – was unconstitutional because it allowed “foreign corporations to participate in the exploration of the country’s natural resources” without observing required safeguards.

The agreement was signed in 2005 but failed to materialize.

In 2018, under then-President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines and China also signed a document on Cooperation on Oil and Gas Development but Duterte himself terminated the talks last June after both sides failed to resolve the issue of sovereignty over Reed Bank in the Spratlys… Read More
