NBI, PNP name suspended BuCor chief Bantag as respondent in Lapid slay
(CNN Philippines) Metro Manila — The National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police have filed a joint complaint naming suspended Bureau of Corrections chief Gerald Bantag as one of the respondents behind the killing of radio broadcaster Percy Lapid.

“The case has been filed with our prosecutors and from there we will proceed with the case proper and hopefully this issue will be laid to rest the way it should be when crime is committed against a citizen of the Republic of the Philippines, especially this time we are talking about a member of media,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said in a briefing on Monday.

Bantag was initially named as one of the 160 “persons of interest” in the Lapid slay.

Speaking to CNN Philippines’ The Source, Berteni Causing, lawyer of the Mabasa family, said the pieces of evidence so far gathered are pointing to Bantag as the mastermind behind the death of the broadcaster… Read More

MPLI curse continues as RSG Philippines yields to Baloyskie, Geek Fam

MPLI curse continues as RSG Philippines yields to Baloyskie, Geek Fam
(Manila Bulletin) The curse of the MPL Invitational continued to haunt the Philippine teams as the last Filipino team standing in RSG Philippines bowed out of the tournament after a 2-1 loss to the Geek Fam Indonesia on Sunday, Nov. 6.

Ironically, the last MPL Philippine team in the semifinals saw their campaign end at the hands of two Filipino imports Allen “Baloyskie” Baloy and Aaron “JanaaQT” Lazaro who led the Indonesian crew to another monumental upset of a Filipino champion team.

Fresh from a 2-0 sweep of Blacklist International a day before, Geek Fam continued to shock the rest of the field when it scored a dominant 10-5 victory in the series opener.

1rrad kept his steady play for RSG PH in the onset of the match but Aboy on the midlane Valentina pick proved to be the biggest thorn to the side of the Filipino crew, finishing with perfect 5-0-1 line.

Baloyskie on the Diggie also allowed Caderaa on the Beatrix to quickly reach his power spike to put up a neat 3-0-4 KDA… Read More

The first biodegradable water bottle is coming, for real this time

The first biodegradable water bottle is coming, for real this time
(BusinessMirror)THE Cove water bottle is a thin, sturdy cylinder, eggshell-white with a matching lid. It feels familiar. “If someone gave that to you,” offered Alex Totterman, Cove’s founder and chief executive, “you probably would have no idea that that wasn’t a plastic bottle.”

If someone does give you this bottle, it would be a remarkable achievement. Scientists and businesses have spent many years and much money trying to replace everyday packaging with natural materials that don’t pollute the Earth—so far, that’s given us little beyond compostable straws.

But the challenge hasn’t deterred Cove from its own five-year journey to producing the first “fully biodegradable” bottle of water. In the coming months, Totterman says Cove’s creation will finally hit stores at $2.99 a pop.

Totterman has also said this before. In February 2019, he told Fast Company Cove’s bottles were arriving in stores later that month. They didn’t. In October 2020, Totterman told the Los Angeles Times his bottles were arriving after the new year. Still nope… Read More

Food prices main driver of October inflation of 7.7%–a 14-year high

Food prices main driver of October inflation of 7.7%–a 14-year high
(BusinessMirror) EXPENSIVE food items pushed the country’s inflation to its highest level since the rice price crisis 14 years ago and may continue doing so this month, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

PSA data showed inflation reached 7.7 percent in October, the highest since December 2008 when inflation hit 7.8 percent, which also coincided with the onset of the Global Financial Crisis.

The inflation of food and non-alcoholic beverages was recorded at 9.4 percent nationwide and accounted for 80.9 percent of the increase in the country’s inflation print for October. Food inflation alone is pegged at 9.8 percent.

“[The] situation right now [in] October, particularly inflation. Is largely fueled by food inflation. Our food inflation [at the] national level is 9.4 percent and [we know that the] weight of the food basket in our national basket is quite high, it’s about 35 percent,” National Statistician Claire Dennis S. Mapa said in a briefing on Friday… Read More

House bill to make Philippine Rise a protected area
(BusinessWorld) A CONGRESSMAN has filed a bill that seeks to classify a large part of the Philippine Rise, a vast undersea region east of Luzon, as a protected area where unsustainable fishing will be banned.

This would contribute to sustainable fisheries “for present and future generations of Filipinos,” he added.

The bill seeks to create a Philippine Rise Marine Resource Protected Area Management Board to serve as the policy-making body for Benham Bank.
