(BusinessWorld) A SENATOR on Thursday said he would propose a cut in President Ferdinand R. Marcos’ confidential funds for next year and require reports for better transparency.

“In due time, I will propose an amendment to reduce the confidential and intelligence funds given to the Office of the President, but I expect to be defeated,” Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Martin D. Pimentel III said in plenary.

“Let us see the reaction of the Office of the President, if they’re open and will welcome such a move,” he added.

UP ranks highest among PH universities in 2023 Asia University Rankings
(CNN Philippines) Metro Manila — The University of the Philippines placed at the top of the list of higher learning institutions in the country in the 2023 QS Asia University Rankings.

Sixteen other local universities made it to the list that was released on Tuesday.

UP ranked 87th in Asia overall, followed by Ateneo de Manila (134th) De La Salle University (171), and University of Santo Tomas (175). Ateneo de Davao University rounded off the top five, settling in the 551 to 600 range.

In Southeast Asia, UP ranked 18th, followed by Ateneo de Manila University (26th), De La Salle University (38th), University of Santo Tomas (41st), and Ateneo de Davao University (88th).

A total of 760 universities in Asia were included.

“Key indicators used to formulate this year’s rankings include academic and employer reputations, the number of staff holding a PhD, and the percentage of international students,” said QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

NDRRMC: ‘Paeng’ death toll now at 158
(CNN Philippines) Metro Manila — The death toll from Severe Tropical Storm Paeng has reached 158, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Tuesday.

In its latest situational report, the NDRRMC confirmed 123 deaths, with the remaining 35 still for validation. Most of the deaths to be validated are from Calabarzon.

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has the most deaths (63), followed by Western Visayas (34), and Calabarzon (20).

The agency also tallied 142 injuries and 34 missing individuals.

Disaster management officials said over 4.6 million people or around 1.3 million families were affected by the tropical cyclone.

Paeng damaged 53,210 houses, of which nearly 5,000 were totally destroyed.

“There has been a suggestion that has been going around for many years now that we will put the disaster response team, the national response team under the Office of the President,” he told a news briefing in Tacloban City in central Philippines, based on a transcript sent by the presidential palace.

“I think that we are headed in that direction because of the weather that we are suffering now [and] the effects of climate change,” he added.

Taguig ramps up jabs for students, frontliners
(BusinessMirror) THE Taguig city government is set to visit more schools in the city to conduct Covid-19 vaccination for students and education frontliners as part of the city’s effort to stop the spread of the virus and ensure safety.

On Sunday, the city government announced that over 10,000 individuals were vaccinated as it joined the Department of Health’s (DOH) PinasLakas Immunization Campaign and vaccinates through the School Tour: One-Stop Shop Bakuna for children aged 5 to 17 years old as face-to-face classes have resumed.
