Philippines Women make World Cup history – in shadow of ‘the three Bs’
(The Guardian) On the penultimate day of January, Sarina Bolden scored the final penalty in a shootout that gave the Philippines victory over Taiwan, a place in the semi-final of the Women’s Asian Cup and – the biggest prize of all – automatic qualification to the 2023 Women’s World Cup. This is the first time a Philippines team of any gender at any age level will appear on the global stage.

As spot-kicks go then, it was a big one and the sight of the ball hitting the back of the net in the Indian city of Pune is one that the team’s coach, Alen Stajcic, will never forget. “It was pretty hard to describe – it was a special feeling,” the Australian, who took over last October, says. “Even though that had been the goal deep down for a lot of the players, it was still unexpected for them. It was great seeing people, people who had been there for a long time, celebrate something special.”

One of those celebrating was Mariano Araneta, the president of the Philippine Football Federation. “The achievement of the women’s team can be a gamechanger for the sport here,” he says. “It really goes beyond qualifying for the World Cup. It has given us renewed hope and has inspired all stakeholders to further develop the game.”.. Read More

NBL22: ‘Special’ Filipino big man Kai Sotto giving Adelaide 36ers a big boost as he chases his NBA dream

NBL22: ‘Special’ Filipino big man Kai Sotto giving Adelaide 36ers a big boost as he chases his NBA dream
(Herald Sun) The Adelaide 36ers have enjoyed the support of an entire nation in NBL22.

Home games are always loud and proud but, whenever the Sixers hit the road, there is an unusually large support for them in the stands.

It’s all down to the hype around their towering big man Kai Sotto.

The 19-year-old is the darling of basketball-mad Philippines and has put the Aussie league on the map in the island nation — social media posts from the Sixers and the NBL tend to go viral when the 218cm giant is mentioned.

With almost 300,000 Philippines-born people living in Australia, Sotto’s pull is so strong that opposing clubs target advertising to the local Filipino communities in their states in a bid to boost crowds.

“Filipinos, they love basketball,” Sotto said after another large contingent of his countrymen and women turned out to support him at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena… Read More

2-M children in Philippines may have been victims of online sexual abuse last year — report
(**Agency**) MANILA, Philippines — As many as 2 million Filipino children may have been subjected to online sexual abuse and exploitation last year, according to a new report.

The estimate represents a scaled size of the Philippines’ population, based on the findings of “Disrupting Harm in the Philippines,” a report prepared by global network ECPAT, Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) and the Italy-based Unicef Office of Research-Innocenti.

“[I]n the past year alone, 20% of internet-using children aged 12-17 in the Philippines were victims of grave instances of online sexual exploitation and abuse. This includes being blackmailed to engage in sexual activities, someone sharing their sexual images without permission, or being coerced to engage in sexual activities through promises of money or gifts,” the report read.

This can mean that “two million children…were subjected to any of these harms in just one year”, based on the report’s estimates.

The findings are based on a nationally-representative household survey, where interviews were conducted in person with 950 children aged 12-17 who use the internet, and a parent or caregiver of each minor. .. Read More
