‘Green’ wastewater plant to be built in Subic

'Green' wastewater plant to be built in Subic
(The Manila Times) SUBIC, Zambales: A new “green” wastewater treatment plant will be constructed by Subicwater together with the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) and the Department of Science and Technology (DoST), with the aim of creating a cost-effective way to treat wastewater and its effluents.

The treatment plant will be the first of its kind in the Philippines as it will use a technology called “Phyto Vortex,” which will separate wastewater and its effluents, or the sediment that remained in the wastewater.

Coupled with the use of indigenous Filipino plants, the aim is to extract the nutrients coming from the effluent sediments to be discharged to the environment while bringing back some form of wastewater that could be reused as irrigation or as flushing water.

Subicwater will use as a pilot site its own wastewater facility located near the old campus of The Manila Times College in Upper Cubi, which was constructed during the time American forces were in the freeport zone… Read More

Coast guard reports more Filipino fishermen in disputed Chinese-controlled shoal
(Radio Free Asia) The Philippine Coast Guard said Friday it had seen more Filipino fishermen operating off a rich fishing ground in Manila’s exclusive economic zone, describing this as a “significant milestone” because China has effectively controlled South China Sea waters in that area for the past decade.

A patrol ship had monitored around 45 Filipino fishing boats in the Scarborough Shoal between Feb. 25 and March 5 – the highest number observed since 2012, when China took control of the area – according to Adm. Artemio Abu, the coast guard commandant.

In a statement, the coast guard confirmed “the increasing presence of Filipino fishermen” in the area and said that it had also kept watch and provided the Filipino fishermen with relief supplies.

“Seeing more Filipino fishing boats in Bajo de Masinloc is a proof of our intensified efforts to safeguard Filipino fishermen who consider fishing as their primary source of livelihood,” Abu said using the Filipino name for Scarborough Shoal, a triangular shaped rocky outcrop… Read More

US, Philippines To Hold Their ‘Largest-Ever’ War Games
(Capital News) Manila – The Philippines and the United States will kick off the largest-ever joint military drills in the archipelago nation next week, US officials said Tuesday, showing off their strong defence ties in the face of growing Chinese assertiveness.

Nearly 9,000 Filipino and American soldiers will take part in the 12-day war games on the main island of Luzon, which are usually an annual affair but were cancelled or curbed during the pandemic.

The exercises, which start March 28, will cover among other things maritime security, live-fire training, counterterrorism, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, the US embassy said in a statement.

“(Both sides) will train together to expand and advance shared tactics, techniques and procedures that strengthen our response capabilities and readiness for real-world challenges,” said Major General Jay Bargeron, commander of the US 3rd Marine Division.

Recent manoeuvres between the longtime allies have focused on potential conflict in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety.

China has ignored a 2016 ruling by The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration that its historical claim is without basis… Read More

Roque sees Duterte as possible mediator in Russia-Ukraine conflict

Roque sees Duterte as possible mediator in Russia-Ukraine conflict
(JounalOnline) UniTeam senatorial candidate Harry Roque believes that President Duterte can assist in mediating the Russia-Ukraine conflict given the country’s neutral position and constitutionally-mandated foreign policy of peace with all nations.

Roque, an international law expert, said the Philippines has a stake in the conflict’s peaceful resolution because of the country’s dependence on imported oil and gas and strong bilateral partnership with Russia.

Citing the friendly Philippine-Russia relations since the start of the Duterte administration, Roque attested to the personal ties between the President and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a recent speech in Tacloban City, Duterte publicly acknowledged his friendship with Putin and admitted being affected by Russia’s current situation. The President, however, maintained the country’s neutrality on the issue.

The former presidential spokesman sees Duterte as a potential mediator, given his standing among nations directly and indirectly involved in the Eastern European conflict.

Roque said the President is a friend of Russia and has good relations with the United States government since the Visiting Forces Agreement and Mutual Defense Treaty between the US and the Philippines are still in effect… Read More
